DTCC's Production Initiatives: Where Things Actually Stand
A cross-initiative production rate and transition-lag view for dtcc.

| Initiative | Operator | Status | Grade | Announced | Production |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTCC Project Ion | The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) | limited-production | T2 | 2020-05-18 | 2022-08-22 |
| DTCC Tokenization Service | The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) | limited-production | T2 | 2026-05-04 | 2026-07-15 |
DTCC (the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, which runs the core infrastructure that US stock and bond trades settle through) has two initiatives with evidence of real production activity, and both currently sit at the same status: limited production, meaning they've run real transactions but haven't become the primary or full system yet 1 2.
Project Ion: alternative settlement platform
Project Ion is DTCC's alternative equities-settlement platform, and as of 2022-08-22 it was documented handling more than 100,000 transactions per day in a parallel production environment 1. "Parallel production" here means it was processing real transaction volume alongside the main DTC systems, which remained the official record of trades 1. There's no documentary evidence that this was ever shut down, so the last confirmed state is still limited-production, even though there's no sign of recent activity either — that gap is treated as a stall rather than a confirmed end 1.
Tokenization Service: converting held securities into tokens
The DTCC Tokenization Service is a newer initiative for creating tokenized (blockchain-based digital) records of assets that are already sitting in DTC's custody system 2. On 2026-07-15, DTCC reported that DTC-held securities were actually converted into tokens and used in multiple real production trades 2. Those transactions ran for several hours inside a live DTC production environment, but the full, broader launch of the service is still planned for October 2026 2.
Production rate and transition-lag view, side by side
| Initiative | Latest evidenced production activity | Status | Full-scale timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project Ion | 100,000+ transactions/day (as of 2022-08-22) | limited-production 1 | No shutdown evidence found; no confirmed full-scale date, and current inactivity is only inferred, not confirmed 1 |
| Tokenization Service | Multiple real trades over several hours (2026-07-15) | limited-production 2 | Full service launch planned for October 2026 2 |
Looking at both together, DTCC's pattern across these two initiatives is to prove out real production transactions first — at meaningful volume for Ion and across multiple trades for the Tokenization Service — before committing to a full-scale, primary-system launch 1 2. The lag between "real transactions happening" and "full production launch" is explicitly open-ended for Project Ion, since no shutdown or completion evidence exists, while for the Tokenization Service that lag has a stated target of October 2026 1 2.
What we don't yet know
We don't yet have a verified figure for either initiative's current production volume or an independently confirmed (rather than self-reported) transition date, since both facts here come from DTCC's own reporting rather than on-chain or simulated verification 1 2.
What we verified vs. what is reported
Both facts on this page are classified as reported, not independently verified — meaning they come from primary-source documentation (DTCC's own statements or documented environments) rather than from on-chain or simulated verification 1 2. The Project Ion transaction volume and the Tokenization Service's real-trade activity are both reported at high confidence, but neither is confirmed as verified in the stricter sense, and no claims on this page are flagged as disputed 1 2.
